Giant´s Causeway

The giant´s Causeway is an area of basalt colums, the result of an ancient volcanic eruption. It is in Northern Ireland.
It was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.
According to legend, the columns are the remains of a causeway built by a giant. The story tells that the Irish giant Finn was challenged to a fight by the Scottish giant Ben. Finn accepted the challenge and built the causeway across the North Channer so that the two giants could meet. There are some versions of the story. In one version Finn´s wife disguises him as a baby to scare Ben.

Work with the story in "Songs and Games" from Zona de Alumnos (Educacyl). LEVEL 1 UNIT 3

Favourite things about St Patrick´s Day

On March 17th we celebrate St Patrick´s Day. It is celebrated in Ireland and all around the world.
My favourite things about this festival:

  • Some of the world´s most iconic landmarks light up in green. For example, the Eiffel Tower in Paris.

  • It is almost the end of winter. Spring is coming! You can see daffodils, snowdrops and tulips in most of the gardens.

  • There are some beautiful parades in Dublin and New York City.
  • In Chicago you can see a river in "green".
  • People wear in green all around the world.
  • Roast spring lamb is a traditional meal.

Half Penny Bridge or Ha´penny bridge in Dublin (Ireland): it is a pedestrian bridge ( no cars on it). It was built in 1816 over the river Liffey. It is 43 metres long.
In the past  you had to pay a half penny to cross the river.

  • Ponte Vecchio (Florence, Italy)

A leprechaun

What is a leprechaun?

It is a type of fairy in Irish folklore. They are little bearded men, wearing a coat and hat.
They are solitary creatures who spend their time making and mending shoes and have a hidden pot of gold at the end of the rainbow
If captured by a human, they often grant three wishes in exchange for their freedom.

Ireland - Saint Patrick´s Day

Ireland is a European country. It is an island in the North Atlantic.

Saint Patrick is one of the Ireland´s Patron Saints. Saint Patrick´s day is celebrated all around the world on the 17th of March.

The most common St Patrick´s Day symbol is the shamrock. It is the leaf of the clover plant and a symbol of the Holy Trinity.
Many people choose to wear the color green and the flag of the Republic of Ireland is often seen in parades.

The Cliffs of Moher

The Cliffs of Moher are one of Ireland’s most popular tourist attractions.

Standing 214m (702 feet) at their highest point they stretch for 8 kilometres (5 miles) along the Atlantic coast of County Clare in the west of Ireland. From the Cliffs of Moher on a clear day one can see the Aran Islands and Galway Bay.
